Thank you to everyone who participated in the Making Strides fundraising efforts and the walk YFE took part in the past few weeks. While the walk may be over, don’t forget that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The American Cancer Society estimates that in the US in 2010 there will be 207,090 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women. To find out more about Breast Cancer visit the ACS site.

While YFE fundraised for the American Cancer Society, there are many other organizations you may want to get involved with. The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month site lists those who have gotten involved in sponsoring the month on their site. Find other organizations (like Susan G. Komen for the Cure)  you may want to get involved with on their site.

Consider using your business to raise awareness and fundraise for breast cancer prevention, finding a cure, and patient care programs for the remainder of October.

You can still donate to YFE’s Making Strides efforts at or by purchasing a YFE ‘Lending a Hand Shirt.’

If you are in the greater Seattle Area, meetup with the ladies of YFE for Making Strides against Breast Cancer walk! It’s only 5k walking and many of us are brining our little ones too. Here is some important information for the walk:

When checking out use coupon code YFESTRIDES for shirt drop off on Sunday at the walk (for FREE SHIPPING).

Parking is available in the Bellevue Square West Parking Garage – enter off of NE 4th Street near JC Penny.

Once you arrive at the Bellevue Downtown Park, you will see some large balloon pillars towards the NE 4th Street entrance. They’re located right next to the stage and I think that would make a good place to find one another.

  • Helping people facing breast cancer get well by providing information, day-to-day help, and emotional support to guide them through every step of their breast cancer experience
  • Finding cures by investing in and conducting research that leads to groundbreaking discoveries into breast cancer’s causes and cures
  • Fighting back by working with lawmakers to support laws that help women battle breast cancer and help all women get access to screenings and care

making strides against breast cancerAt last week’s meeting we had the privilege of listening to Jen Mueller from Talk Sporty to Me, who taught us how to bring sports into our networking to build relationships. She was fabulous! We also were able to hear Aimee Martin, a Community Relationship Manager for American Cancer Society. YFE is fundraising for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. We have 10 days to get the word out to our networks about this great cause.

Breast Cancer is the NUMBER ONE most frequently diagnosed cancer in
Washington State. The American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) event raises awareness of the importance of early detection here in King County.

Funds from this event benefit the Breast and Cervical Health Program in Washington State to provide mammograms and screenings for uninsured women. Our event donations will also go towards funding the Patient Navigators in our King County hospitals.

We are doing the walk- it is only a 5k- on Sunday, 10.10.10. We will have a little after party for the YFE’ers afterward. More info to come! They are also looking for volunteers for the day of the walk! Interested in volunteering? Contact Aimee at 206.674.4118 and Aimee.Martin[at]cancer[dot]org.

Making Strides with YFE

September 10, 2010

MSABC/ACS LogoAt Young Female Entrepreneurs, we love to support organizations that are all about supporting young women. Organizations like the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer stands out to us because of their message. They stress the importance of getting early screenings and mammograms for breast cancer. For nine years, Making Strides has been helping women get the screenings they need as well as supporting the fighters and survivors of breast cancer.

Breast Cancer is the number one most frequently diagnosed cancer in Washington State. The American Cancer Society’s annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk helps to raise awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early screening and detection in the Seattle area. Funds from the walk benefit the Breast and Cervical Health Program in Washington State that provides uninsured women access to mammograms and screenings. Event donations also go toward funding the Patient Navigators in King County hospitals. In 2009, nearly 700,000 people joined the fight against breast cancer and $60 million was raised through Making Strides events. YFE is joining the fight to save lives and supporting Making Strides. We will be raising funds to support the cause and walking as a team in their event.

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk will be taking place Sunday October 10th in the Downtown Bellevue Park. Registration will begin at 8:00 am and the 5k walk will kick off at 9:00 am. There is no registration fee or minimum fundraising amount to participate. People of all ages are welcome to participate in the event as well. Here are more event details – check out what else you can do to support Making Strides.
