Young Female Entrepreneurs The first ever Young Female Entrepreneurs book club started last week!
Week 4: Part 2 of YFE Book Club

It’s our final post for this book club session, so we wanted to wrap things up by highlighting some of the best insights Melody offers us in Craving Success. The entire book includes “132 Tips for Ambitious Entrepreneurs” and here are a just few of my favorites:

KISS, KISS – “Keep it Simple, Stupid or you will Kill It Swiftly and Surely!” (from Chapter 2)

Enough For Everybody – “Don’t worry about competition.” (from Chapter 5)

Good Enough Isn’t Good Enough – “You have to decide if the business has what it takes to be great.” (from Chapter 15)

Now onto this week’s questions:

If you could simplify Melody’s advice, what central theme do you think she was hoping to communicate? What are you gonna take away from the book club?

We are so glad to host the book club and appreciate everyone’s participation. If you’ve been too booked up to read through Craving Success in its entirety, no sweat the book club is always open and you can add to the discussion as you so choose. We will be announcing the next book shortly, so stay tuned!

Week 3: Part 2 of YFE Book Club

We can clearly see that throughout Craving Success, that entrepreneurship runs through Melody’s veins. Part of this is shown in how she goes about her business relationships. It is a thread that runs through each of the ventures she has pursued and while there is most likely not an “Entrepreneurs Gene” per say, there are certain personality and value elements that are shared by those that claim that title.

At the end of Chapter 18, Melody says shares her thoughts on the subject. She states, “It’s really valuable to have someone who is either already connected or demonstrates an ability to establish credible relationships quickly. I used to think attitude was everything and that people can be taught, but now I think differently.” Taking this into consideration, let’s discuss how relationships come into play with running a business.

What can we glean from Melody’s experience as YFEs in terms of what to look for when considering working with others (whether it be hiring employees, purchasing vendor services, or collaborating on joint ventures)?

On the flip-side how can we translate the passion we have for our work into a healthy attitude towards our own client/customer relations?

Week 2: Part 2 of YFE Book Club

No one likes to deal with failure in any area of life but as young business owners we will have to learn to live with it especially at the beginning stages of our ventures. It might feel like a huge downer to realize that failure is a big part of entrepreneurship but no worries – failing is actually where the business opportunities lie.

When something doesn’t work we might find that if we revisit the issue from a new perspective that we come up with a solution that not only answers our current plight’s questions but also opens the doors to many other opportunities and dreams. The trick is learning to fail FAST!

Melody is a tremendous example of failing fast, getting back up to dust her shoulders off and moving on to the next big idea. A big part of Craving Success is dedicated to this form of hands-on-training. In Chapter 12, Melody discusses her failures and how she realized that failing fast was the best way to do it. How many of you prototype your businesses and test prior to launch? What processes and/or resources have been helpful for you in learning to fail fast?

Week 2: Part 1 of YFE Book Club

Last week we talked a bit about spontaneity in our business, and being a start-up junkie. For our next reading section, I wanted to chat a bit about your marketing plans. In chapter 10, Melody is selling Biringer products in a mall kiosk for the holidays. Her consultant’s advice to her is to “stack product high and offer samples.” Even though this strategy seems super literal and just aimed towards product based businesses, this really struck me as an interesting marketing technique for all of us. So today, I thought I’d spark a conversation about how you approach getting sales.

When you’re marketing your business, do you try to appear overly abundant? Do you say “we” when it’s just you? Or do you put stock pictures or your website to make your company seem bigger? Do you think it’s a good marketing technique to offer free samples? I know my husband hates when I do it as a designer, but has it been successful for you?

Join the private YFE Book Club Facebook Group to discuss the following questions with other entrepreneurial women in their 20s and 30s.

About Moderator Morgan Hatton
Raised in nightclubs, recording studios and TV stations, freelance graphic designer, Morgan Hatton, rebelled against her entertainment family traditions in her early twenties to work the 9-5 in the stringent corporate world of her hometown, Washington, D.C. Unable to deny all of the gumption planted early by her parents, she has little by little seemed to inevitably circle back to that 1099 world she grew up in.
